Overview
Symbicort is an inhaled medicine containing two ingredients: budesonide and formoterol. Budesonide reduces inflammation in the airways, and formoterol opens the airways to make breathing easier. It is used for asthma and, in some people, also for COPD.Ibrahim's pharmacy advice
When a patient comes to the pharmacy with Symbicort, one of the first things I usually check is inhaler technique. If it is their first time, I show step by step how to use it. If they have used it before, I often ask whether the technique is still correct and whether they remember to rinse the mouth after use. This matters because poor technique means the medicine may not reach the lungs properly, and not rinsing the mouth can increase the risk of oral thrush and throat irritation.
How to use your inhaler – step by step
Symbicort – Turbuhaler (dry powder)
Symbicort is not a reliever – use Ventoline for acute breathlessness. Symbicort must be taken every single day.
Hold upright and load
Hold the Turbuhaler upright. Twist the red ring fully to the right, then fully to the left, until it clicks. The device is now loaded.
Dosage and Ibrahim's advice
- Always follow your doctor's plan, because the dose can differ from person to person.
- Many people use 1 to 2 inhalations 1 to 2 times daily, but your prescription is the key guide.
- Some people with asthma may have a plan where Symbicort is used both regularly and when symptoms appear, but only if this is clearly agreed with the clinician.
- Correct inhaler technique is very important. Ask your pharmacy or clinic for help if you are unsure.
Side effects
- Common side effects may include hoarseness, throat irritation, or a mild cough.
- The steroid part can cause oral thrush, especially if you do not rinse your mouth after use.

Drug interactions
- Some antibiotics, antifungals, and beta-blockers may affect Symbicort.
- Other medicines that affect the heart or breathing should also be mentioned.
- Always tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you use.
Important warnings
- If your breathing symptoms get worse, or you need more rescue medicine than usual, contact a doctor.
- Do not stop your regular inhaler treatment without medical advice.
- After use, rinse your mouth to reduce the risk of thrush and throat irritation.
- If the medicine does not seem to work as expected, your inhaler technique should be checked.
Ramadan and fasting
- Inhalers are often considered not to break the fast, but religious opinions may vary.
- From a health point of view, it is important not to stop asthma or COPD treatment without advice.
- If you are unsure, you can speak both with your doctor and with a religious advisor you trust.
Food and drink
- Symbicort is not related to food.
