I often explain it like this: melatonin is not a strong sleeping pill that simply knocks you out. It works more like a gentle reminder to the body that night has arrived. That is why it works best together with a calm bedtime routine, lower light, and less screen time late in the evening.

Use

  • Melatonin is a natural hormone made by the body in the evening to support sleep.
  • As a medicine, it is used when it is difficult to fall asleep at the desired time.
  • It may also be used when the sleep-wake rhythm has shifted, for example after long-distance travel.

Dosage and Ibrahim's advice

  • Follow your doctor's plan or the instructions on the pack. It is often taken 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime.
  • Some tablets should be swallowed whole and should not be crushed or split.
  • Try to take it around the same time each evening so the body can build a steadier rhythm.
  • If you notice no benefit after several days or weeks, speak with your doctor or pharmacist.

Side effects

  • Some people feel sleepy or tired the next morning.
  • Headache or mild dizziness can happen.
  • Some people notice vivid dreams or sleep that feels different from usual.

Drug interactions

  • Other sleeping medicines or sedatives may increase drowsiness.

  • It can be taken with or without food.
  • Avoid too much caffeine late in the day, such as coffee, strong tea, or energy drinks.
  • Melatonin works best when the surroundings also support sleep, such as dim light and a calm bedtime routine.

Storage

  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Store at room temperature and protect from moisture and strong light.
  • Do not use after the expiry date.
