Overview

High blood pressure often stays quiet, but over time it can put strain on the heart, brain, and kidneys. Losartan helps the blood vessels relax more, so the blood can move with less pressure.

Ibrahim's pharmacy advice

I often explain it like this: high blood pressure does not always feel like something is wrong, but the body may still be working against that pressure every day. Losartan is not always a medicine you feel straight away, but it quietly helps the circulation become calmer. That is why steady routines matter more than whether you feel an immediate effect.

Use

  • Losartan is used to lower high blood pressure.
  • It reduces a body signal that would otherwise tighten the blood vessels.
  • In some people it is also used to help protect the kidneys.

Dosage and Ibrahim's advice

  • It is usually taken once daily, preferably around the same time each day.
  • Many people begin with a usual starting dose, but your doctor decides what suits you best.
  • The tablet can be taken with or without food.
  • If you feel dizzy at the beginning, stand up slowly from bed or from a chair.

Side effects

  • Dizziness or tiredness may happen, especially at the start.
  • Some people may get higher potassium levels in the blood.
  • Blood tests may be used to monitor the kidneys and salts.

Drug interactions

  • Be careful with potassium supplements and salt substitutes that contain potassium.
  • Pain medicines such as ibuprofen or diclofenac may strain the kidneys if used for longer periods.
  • Always tell your doctor or pharmacist about all the medicines you use, including non-prescription medicines.

Important warnings

  • Do not use during pregnancy or if you are planning pregnancy.
  • Vomiting, diarrhoea, or dehydration may sometimes mean the medicine needs extra review.
  • Contact your doctor if you become very dizzy or if your urine output changes clearly.

Ramadan and fasting

  • If taken once daily, it can often be taken after iftar or at suhoor.
  • Choose a time you can realistically keep every day.
  • If fasting causes clear dehydration or dizziness, speak with your doctor.

Food and drink

  • It can be taken with or without food.
  • Drink enough fluids, especially in hot weather or if you have vomiting or diarrhoea.
  • Be careful with high-potassium products if your doctor has advised caution.

Storage

  • Keep out of reach of children and store below 25°C.
  • Keep in the original packaging to protect from light and moisture.
  • Do not use after the expiry date.
