Overview

Enalapril is used for high blood pressure and, in some cases, for heart failure. It helps the blood vessels relax so that blood can flow more easily and the strain on the heart and circulation becomes lower.

Ibrahim's pharmacy advice

I often explain it like this: if the blood has to move under too much pressure every day, both the heart and the blood vessels become tired over time. Enalapril helps make that system calmer. But some people notice dizziness or a dry cough at the beginning, so it is important not to stop on your own, but to speak with your doctor if it starts to trouble you.

Use

  • Enalapril is used for high blood pressure and, in some cases, for heart failure.
  • It helps the blood vessels open more so the blood pressure can come down.
  • In some cases it is also used to reduce the strain on the heart.

Dosage and Ibrahim's advice

  • Treatment often starts with a low dose taken once or twice daily according to your doctor's plan.
  • Your doctor may adjust the dose gradually based on blood pressure and blood tests.
  • If you feel dizzy at the start, rise slowly from bed or from a chair.
  • Do not stop treatment without medical advice.

Side effects

  • Dry cough, dizziness, and tiredness can occur.
  • Some people may experience blood pressure that becomes too low, especially at the beginning.
  • Blood tests may sometimes show changes in kidney function or potassium levels.
  • Swelling of the face, lips, or throat is rare but serious and needs urgent medical help.

Drug interactions

  • Be careful with potassium supplements and salt substitutes that contain potassium.
  • Some pain medicines such as ibuprofen or diclofenac may increase the risk of kidney problems, especially if you are dehydrated.
  • Always tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you use, including non-prescription medicines.

Important warnings

  • Do not use during pregnancy or if you are planning pregnancy.
  • Contact your doctor if you feel very dizzy or if you pass much less urine than usual.
  • Vomiting, diarrhoea, or dehydration may sometimes mean the medicine needs extra review.
  • Blood tests may be needed to monitor the kidneys and body salts.

Ramadan and fasting

  • If taken once daily, it can often be taken in the evening or after Iftar.
  • If taken twice daily, the doctor can often help fit it around Iftar and Suhoor.
  • If fasting causes dehydration or dizziness, speak with your doctor.
  • Do not change the plan on your own.

Food and drink

  • It can be taken with or without food.
  • Drink enough fluids, especially in hot weather or if you have vomiting or diarrhoea.
  • Be careful with products high in potassium if your doctor has advised caution.

Storage

  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Keep in the original packaging to protect from light and moisture.
  • Do not use after the expiry date.
