Overview
High blood pressure often causes no clear symptoms, but over time it can put strain on the body. Amlodipine helps the blood vessels relax, so the blood can flow with less pressure.Ibrahim's pharmacy advice
I often explain it like this: when blood vessels are too tight, the blood has to push through like water forced through a narrow hose. Amlodipine helps open that path, so the pressure becomes calmer. That is why it should be taken regularly, even on days when you feel completely well.
Use
- Amlodipine is used to treat high blood pressure.
- It works by relaxing and widening the blood vessels.
- High blood pressure often gives no warning signs, but over time it can damage the heart, brain, and kidneys.
Dosage and Ibrahim's advice
- It is usually taken once daily, preferably at about the same time each day.
- Many adults start with 5 mg daily, and the doctor may increase the dose to 10 mg if needed.
- It can be taken in the morning or in the evening; the most important thing is regular use.
- Do not stop the medicine without medical advice.
Side effects
- Some people develop swelling in the ankles or feet.
- Headache or a feeling of warmth in the face may happen, especially at the beginning.
- Dizziness can occur, particularly when standing up quickly.
- Some people may also feel tired or notice their heartbeat more than usual.
Drug interactions
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all other medicines you take.
- Some medicines can change the way amlodipine works in the body.
- This is especially important with heart medicines, antifungals, certain antibiotics, HIV medicines, and St John's wort.
Important warnings
- Avoid large amounts of grapefruit or grapefruit juice.
- Extra caution may be needed if you have liver disease.
- Seek medical advice if swelling, dizziness, or tiredness becomes more noticeable.
Ramadan and fasting
- Because this medicine is often taken once daily, it can usually be taken at Iftar or Suhoor.
- Choose a time you can realistically keep every day.
- Speak with your doctor before fasting if you also take other blood pressure medicines.
Food and drink
- It can be taken with or without food.
- A glass of water is usually enough when taking the tablet.
- Alcohol may make dizziness more noticeable in some people.
Storage
- Keep in a dry place and out of reach of children.
- Avoid very hot or humid places.
- Do not use after the expiry date.
